What cookies are
Cookies are small text files that a website stores in your browser. The browser sends them back to the site on later visits, which lets the site recognize your session, for example to keep you signed in.
First-party cookies are set by the site you are visiting; third-party cookies are set by other companies, often for advertising or analytics. Websites can also store information in your browser using local storage, which works similarly but is not sent to the server automatically.
Cookies can also be session cookies, which disappear when you close your browser, or persistent cookies, which stay for a set period unless you delete them sooner. This policy tells you how long each FlipPilot cookie lasts.
How FlipPilot uses cookies
FlipPilot uses a small number of first-party cookies, and all of them are strictly necessary. Without them, you couldn’t sign in or stay signed in, sign-in and password-reset links couldn’t be protected, and we couldn’t remember the cookie choices you made.
Because these cookies are essential to provide the service you asked for, they don’t require your consent and can’t be switched off in our consent tool. You can still block them in your browser, but FlipPilot won’t work properly if you do.
None of our cookies are used to track you across other websites, to build an advertising profile, or to sell or share your personal information.
Cookie categories
Our consent tool groups cookies into three categories. Only the first is in use today; the other two exist so that your choice is already recorded if we ever introduce cookies of that kind.
| Category | What it would cover | In use today? | Default |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strictly necessary | Keeping you signed in, protecting sign-in links and remembering your cookie choices. | Yes | Always on (cannot be switched off) |
| Analytics | Understanding which features are used, using aggregated data only, so we can improve them. | No | Off unless you opt in |
| Marketing | Measuring campaigns or personalizing promotions. | No | Off unless you opt in; stays off while a Global Privacy Control signal is on |
Switching Analytics or Marketing on today doesn’t set any additional cookies, because FlipPilot doesn’t use any cookies in those categories. If that changes, we will update this policy before any such cookie is used, and it will be used only if you have opted in to its category.
Strictly necessary cookies
These are the cookies FlipPilot sets. All are first-party, meaning they are set by and sent only to FlipPilot.
| Name | Purpose | Set by | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
sb-<project>-auth-token (may be split into parts ending in .0, .1 and so on) | Keeps you signed in. Set when you sign in. | FlipPilot (first-party) | Up to 400 days, renewed while you use FlipPilot; removed when you sign out |
sb-<project>-auth-token-code-verifier | Protects sign-in, email-confirmation and password-reset links using a security technique called PKCE, so a link only works in the browser that requested it. | FlipPilot (first-party) | Short-lived; deleted after use |
fp_consent | Stores your cookie choices: the policy version, the date, whether analytics and marketing are on or off, and whether a Global Privacy Control signal was detected. | FlipPilot (first-party) | 365 days, after which we ask again. We also ask again if the categories in this policy change. |
In the cookie names above, <project> stands for the identifier of FlipPilot’s authentication project.
Photos in your account are shown through private, signed links that expire after a short time. These links don’t set any cookies.
Browser storage
FlipPilot also stores one item in your browser’s local storage. It is not a cookie:
| Name | Purpose | Type | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
fp-theme | Remembers whether you chose the light, dark or system theme. It is never sent to our servers. | Local storage | Until you clear your browser storage or choose “Match system” |
What we don’t use
FlipPilot currently does not use:
- advertising or retargeting cookies;
- analytics or audience-measurement cookies;
- social-media cookies, buttons or pixels; or
- any other third-party tracking technology.
If we decide to add analytics or marketing cookies in the future, we will update this policy first, and those cookies will stay off unless you opt in through the consent tool.
Your choices
The first time you visit FlipPilot, a banner at the bottom of the screen asks for your cookie choices. It offers three options with equal prominence:
- Accept all: allows all optional categories;
- Reject non-essential: keeps every optional category off; and
- Customize: opens a preference centre where you can switch each optional category on or off.
There is no cookie wall: you can use FlipPilot whichever option you choose. Strictly necessary cookies are always on, because the service can’t work without them.
Your choice is saved in the fp_consent cookie described above, so we don’t ask you again on every visit. It is stored only in the browser you used; if you use FlipPilot on another device or browser, or clear your cookies, you will be asked again. We also ask again after 365 days, and whenever we change the categories in this policy.
You can change your mind at any time. Reopen your preferences using Cookie settings in the site footer, or with the button below.
Global Privacy Control
Global Privacy Control (GPC) is a setting offered by some browsers and extensions that tells websites you don’t want your personal information sold or shared. FlipPilot honors GPC signals. While your browser sends a GPC signal, marketing cookies stay off, and we record that the signal was detected as part of your consent choices.
You don’t need to do anything else for GPC to apply: if your browser sends the signal, FlipPilot treats it as your choice, and the Marketing switch in the preference centre stays off while the signal is on. To turn GPC on or off, check your browser’s privacy settings or the extension you use. Turning it off doesn’t switch any category on by itself; your saved choices still apply.
Browser controls
Most browsers let you see, delete and block cookies and site data. The settings are usually in these places:
- Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies, or Site settings.
- Safari: Settings (or Preferences) → Privacy, and Manage Website Data.
- Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data.
- Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions.
Menu names vary between browser versions and devices; your browser’s help pages have up-to-date instructions. Please note that if you block or delete FlipPilot’s strictly necessary cookies, you won’t be able to sign in or stay signed in, and clearing site data will also reset your theme and cookie choices.
Changes to this policy
We will update this policy if the cookies or storage we use change, and change the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. If we change the categories of cookies we use, we will ask for your choices again before any new optional cookies are set.
